What have Marlene Dietrich, Zara Leander or Claire Waldoff in common with the Gay Games?
Quite something, as the audience of today’s workshop “The Sound of ‘Sex’ “ did learn at the music university of Cologne.
The audience was as colourful as the entire theme was it by itself. More than 30 interested from England, America, Germany, Croatia and various other countries followed excited the recital of Professor Dr. Anno Mungen and Björn Dornbusch. The both scientists keep themselves busy with “Queer Studies” within the field of music since many years. Are there any interrelationships between voice and identity? What states the Voice about the Sex of an artist? And what characterises a Diva?
With thrill and multimedia they led their audience through the recital. Music, movie clips and quotes from the 1920th and 1920th illuminated both art and the cultural scene from that time. From singers as Claire Waldoff with a special high pitch voice to open bisexual Marlene Dietrich, who liked to play with the masculine look. All this characterises the picture from artists and Divas, until today.
Tensed silence and attentive listening during the recital resulted in an agile discussion about identity and gender roles by the end of the reading.
The audience showed great interest. “I find the accompanying events very suitable and interesting. It’s always exciting to learn about new culture”, states Neil, an American swimmer. “Thanks to the good and compact local infrastructure I can manage both my sports and the cultural events.
