Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum
The Chess competition takes place at the Deutsches Sport and Olympia Museum, located at the beautiful Rheinhafen (Rhine port) area of Cologne. It is located along the Rhine just south of the Altstadt and can easily be reached from any location in the center of the city by walking or by public transportation. The closest tram stop is the Heumarkt stop on the U-1 (direction Bensberg), U-7 (Direction Zündorf) or U-9 (direction Königsforst)lines, one stop from Neumarkt and two stops from Rudolfsplatz.
From the Heumarkt tram stop exit the train and cross the square. Be sure to cross only at crosswalks because heavy vehicular traffic (and bikes) travel through the intersection. On your left is the Maritim Hotel (site of the dance competition.) Turn left onto Handwerkstrasse, on the south side of the hotel, following the signs to the Chocolate Museum and . Walk down this street to the Rhine River, crossing Am Leystapel, a major 4-lane highway. At the Rhine River turn right, walking along the river on a large pedestrian path that is on the left side of a small wall. Be sure not to walk on the right side of the wall, a bike path painted red.
Walk to the green bridge on your left that crosses a small canal to the Rhine Hafen. The first building you see is the Chocolate Museum, not a bad stop. Walk right of the museum, the Deutsches Sport and Olympia Museum to the right of the Chocolate Museum.
